| The famed St. Andrews Golf Club Home of the game of golf where all rules are established. Even if you don't play the game, it's a lovely place to visit and heave a hearty lunch, a drink or a spot of tea, while watching the sportsmen and women fight the wind and the dunes. Names in Lights: Names of some Scotsmen who have made the world a better place: Robert Burns, the poet Robert Louis Stevenson, the novelist Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes Alexander Graham Bell, father of the telephone Andrew Carnegie, philanthropist, endowing 28000 libraries world wide Sir Arthur Fleming, inventor of penicillin Commentary from Rosalind Friedman Recently, My husband and I attended a joyous international party, The Edinburgh Festival, where the distinctive sounds of Bagpipes jauntily resound in the air, reminding us at all times that we were in Scotland. Not only did we revel in the wondrously challenging theatrical offerings, some of which went on for many hours, but also in the Fringe Festival that fills the heart and mind with true laughter. Edinburgh, a combination of the very old and the new, boasts a fine court system and is also proud to be the seat of the new Parliament. It is a unique experience; we were not surprised to meet many people who return again and again to the Festival. |
